The TLM 103 uses the transformerless circuit technology already proven in numerous Neumann microphones, and offers an unrivalled low self-noise level and maximum headroom. The capsule used, with its cardioid characteristic, is acoustically well-balanced and offers excellent rejection of rear sound incidence. The TLM 103 is available in matt nickel and matt black. A spider is included in the delivery.Range of application:Thanks to its universal cardioid pick-up pattern, its "plug and play" handling, its extremely low self-noise level and, finally, its price, the TLM 103 is predestined for all demanding applications from home recording to professional broadcasting or recording studios.Polar pattern:The TLM 103 is equipped with a large-diaphragm capsule with a cardioid pick-up pattern. By focusing on this polar pattern, which is used in the majority of recording situations, it has been possible to optimise the suppression of unwanted sound coming from behind. The front of the capsule, and thus its direction of incidence, is indicated by the red Neumann logo on the microphone body.The K 103 large-diaphragm capsule is based on the K 87 capsule familiar from the U 67/U 87 microphones. The capsule has a flat frequency response up to approx. 5 kHz and a wide, flat presence boost of 4 dB above this.The large wire gauze basket protects the capsule from explosive sounds and effectively prevents "pop" noises.No resonance effects are used to achieve the above-mentioned microphone characteristics. As a result, the impulse response is excellent and the TLM 103 is able to transmit the finest details in music and speech without distortion.Electrical characteristics:The TLM 103's equivalent noise level of 7.0 dB-A/17.5 dB CCIR is extremely low, so that even the quietest signals are transmitted virtually noise-free. The microphone transmits sound pressure levels of up to 138 dB without distortion and has a dynamic range of 131 dB (A-weighted).The letters TLM stand for "transformerless microphone". The output transformer usually used in the TLM 103 has been replaced by an electronic circuit which, like a transformer, provides good unbalance attenuation. Therefore, interference signals affecting the balanced modulation line are suppressed as usual.Operational safety:The entire internal structure is elastically mounted to protect against structure-borne sound transmission. In addition, the capsule is mounted on a vibration rubber. The TLM 103's frequency response extends well below 20 Hz. This means that even extremely low-frequency signals can be reproduced without distortion, making the microphone more sensitive to interference in this frequency range, such as structure-borne noise or wind noise. The WS 87 windscreen is available as an accessory for these cases. For close miking, the PS 15 or PS 20 a pop screen can be used.
