There is hardly an effect that is as weird and wacky as the one produced by the Heil Talkbox. The spectrum ranges from wah-like sounds to talking guitar. Jeff Beck paved the way for it in the early 70s, Peter Frampton used it to excess. Richie Sambora's intro to "Livin' on a Prayer" or Joe Walsh's solo in "Rocky Mountain Way" are unforgettable. Yet its use is not entirely simple. A plastic tube is positioned next to the microphone, an amplified signal has to be fed into the device, which is led out through the tube. With the mouth and throat, the musician changes the resonance chamber, creating the talking effect that is picked up by the vocal mic. There have been various attempts over the years to simplify the procedure. But either it sounds completely different, as with the digital vocoder, for example, or it sounds only as ähnlich as with devices with a built-in pre-amp and other attempts. Only the original sounds original, and that is the Heil Talkbox!
