Johston plays mostly unexcited with a lot of feeling. Only now and then he lets the shredder peek out, but then in the truest sense of the word breathtaking. His instruments are correspondingly traditional. The artist has been a loyal Schecter endorser for several years. His guitar is classically Strat-oriented. The present model is an exception only in that the bridge position is occupied by a humbucker, a Schecter Diamond '78. Since the artist makes frequent use of his vibrato system, he needs a construction that is tuning stable. Besides the precise bridge with 2-point linkage, it's the locking machine heads that prevent tuning problems.
The current Johnston HSS is a grateful working instrument that reminds us of the great American model in terms of appearance and feel, while shining with high quality and a tone full of character.
