As early as 1987, the first Ibanez JEM appeared, unmistakable by the distinctive monkey grip in the upper part of the body. The JEM Junior for budget-conscious Vai fans does not do without this bizarre feature either.
The guitar, made of meranti with a standard maple neck, is well-balanced in terms of vibration behaviour with a warm timbre in the low mids. The relationship of the building material with the tropical wood mahogany is clearly evident. Like all JEMs, the junior model also has a so-called HSH pickup assembly, which is controlled via a 5-way switch. A free-floating Floyd Rose-style vibrato system allows spirited action without detuning problems. Slim necks as well as wide fingerboards with low arching and fat jumbo frets are suitable for the rapid playing techniques of the master. The cutaways are cut deep and the neck-body transition is also comfortably designed.
So despite the moderate price, the Junior is a real JEM and once again pays the deserved tribute to the "devil violinist".
