But good old Leo had introduced groundbreaking innovations in the truest sense of the word. Besides the single coil in the bridge position, it was the ingenious headstock with six tuners in a row that made the traditional tilt obsolete. The result: more stability, less wood waste.
In recognition of this historic date, Fender is introducing an anniversary edition based on the historic model.
The 70th Anniversary Esquire is made of roughened pine with a bolt-on maple neck. Tim Shaw, who has been the head pickup designer for a long time, contributed the single coil that is built into the archaic bridge construction. The early Esquires had only one pickup. Only with the Broadcaster, later renamed Telecaster, was a second pickup added.
The guitar, made in the USA, is a worthy replica and does credit to the innovative jubilarian. It is simple, easy to play, sounds authentic and is incredibly robust, something that even the old rock & rollers knew how to appreciate.
