Like Les Paul, Flying V or Explorer, the SG shape is one of the "classic" designs of so-called solid body electric guitars from Gibson. Epiphone, as a subsidiary of the US giant, has set itself the goal of bringing the feeling and sound inherent in the great guitar legends to the man for little money. The Special is basically kept quite simple. Compared to the more elaborately designed SG Standard, it has a bolt-on neck. The body is made of poplar. The finish is matte. Nevertheless, the Special is an interesting instrument for beginners and as a second or travel guitar.
