When the Explorer was introduced in 1958, it was ahead of its time in that it was not accepted by the more conservative guitarists and simply flopped. It was the hippies of the late sixties who took it up and revived it. The Asian Gibson subsidiary Epiphone has taken on the models of the US giant and presents them at reasonable prices in order to make them available to less well-off or simply budget-conscious musicians and fans.
The current model closely follows the 1958 American specifications in terms of construction and pickup selection. Two ProBucker pickups produce a bold and singing sound, well-suited to styles ranging from classic rock and Texas to hard rock and heavy metal.
