When the Explorer was introduced in 1958, it was ahead of its time in that it was not accepted by the more conservative guitarists and simply flopped. It was only the hippies of the late sixties who took it up and revived it. The Asian Gibson subsidiary Epiphone has taken on the models of the US giant and presents them at reasonable prices to make them available to less well-heeled or simply budget-conscious musicians and fans. The 1958 Gothic closely follows the American specifications in terms of construction and choice of woods. The black matt finish clearly caters to instrumentalists with gloomy preferences. It is solid and cleanly finished.
