With its compact design, Engl's Metalmaster 20 Combo belongs to the group of amps that have enjoyed increasing popularity over the past few years. The premise is: manageability and manageable weight with optimal sound yield. And here the Metalmaster delivers without compromise. From ultraclean to rich gain, everything is possible with the typical English creamy overtone distortion. Compared to the Rockmaster, the Metalmaster has a slightly lower midrange, which gives it a nice, bell-like sound in the clean channel. In the second channel, the amp serves what its name stands for - metal - thanks to considerable gain reserves and a lot of bite in the overtone range. Dynamics do not fall by the wayside. The guitar's volume pot can be used effectively for gain control, two channels are perfectly sufficient. If more boost is needed in the lead range, the necessary frequencies can be switched on via the mid boost. The 10" celestion speaker is generally sufficient for recording and rehearsal rooms, if the band is not too loud. In the test with an additional 2x12, it was surprising how loud 20 watts can be, sufficient even for larger clubs and halls. Thanks to the integrated power soak, you always have the volume under control.
