The Rickenbacker company emerged in 1934 from a collaboration between the Swiss exile Adolph Rickenbacker and the musician George Beauxchamp to build the first electric lapsteel guitars, which brought us the first Rickenbacker bass model 4000 in 1957. Its successor, the 4003, came on the market in 1979 and differed from its predecessor mainly in the construction of the truss rod, before different model variations were developed based on the original 4003 design, as was the case with the 4001. All of them, like this bass, have a long sustain, a solid bass foundation and a great richness of overtones. This makes the sound a little nasal, which helps to avoid frequency overlap with melodic instruments such as guitars, especially in a rock context, and positions the bass very harmoniously, but at the same time very present in the mix.

Electrically, the bass is relatively simple, each pickup has its own volume and treble control, plus a three-way switch for pickup selection. The special feature of the Rickenbacker 4003 is the „Rick-O-Sound“-feature: the bass has ütwo jack sockets, one of which is intended for stereo operation, i.e. you can process the signals of the two pickups separately, as we already know from a certain Lemmy Kilmister. Of course, the bass is made of absolutely high quality, typical for Rickenbacker. Besides the first-class finish, the body binding and the triangle inlays in the fingerboard made of Caribbean rosewood provide elegance in connection with the characteristic design of the instrument. Of course, the bass is delivered in a high-quality Rickenbacker hard shell case.
