The Japanese company Ibanez can look back on a long and eventful history, having developed in over 100 years from a small bookshop to the import of Spanish concert guitars from the Salvador Ibanez factory, the construction of copies of popular US guitars in the 60s and 70s and its own, cool designs, mostly of superstrats, to one of the largest manufacturers of musical instruments worldwide. While the company had already developed its own designs for electric bass guitars in the 1950s, it is the Soundgear basses, which have been produced in a wide variety of versions since 1987, that still form the cornerstone of the renowned company's bass range today.

In addition, however, Ibanez has also been offering signature instruments by well-known artists since the 1980s. Jazz fusion bassist Gary Willis, known for his projects Tribal Tech and Slaughterhouse 3 as well as his teaching, developed a signature bass together with Ibanez back in 1999. The GWB35-BKF is a lightweight fretless bass with a basswood body and a three-strip maple neck. This results in a strong and clearly defined tonal foundation with a warm bass foundation. Although there is only one pickup available, the active two-band tone control makes it possible to shape the tone in different directions. An interesting feature is the ramp, the purpose of which is to prevent stops too low in the string plane, so as not to unknowingly sacrifice dynamics in the fretless tone. The tuning machines are also unusual, they are shaped so that they can be operated from any angle. The result is a fretless bass with a modern, flexible sound that should delight not only Gary Willis fans.
