The name Ampeg originally comes from a double bass pickup developed in 1946 by Everette Hull, one of the company's founders and himself a bassist and pianist, which Hull called amplified peg. The Portaflex amp, which could be turned around and recessed into its speaker cabinet for protection and transport, was to prove the standard bass combo of the 1960s and 70s. Ampeg's Super Valve Technology (SVT) amps have also been an integral part of the world's Bühns since 1969. Today, Ampeg belongs to Yamaha, bringing together decades of experience from two major companies that are important for the history of the bass guitar and its amplification.
This is also reflected in the Portaflex series, which now includes three different transistor and two tube amps as well as several cabinets. The PF-112HLF is one of them. In contrast to the other cabinets of the Portaflex series, no Portaflex amp can be mounted on the top plate or recessed inside the cabinet, but this has the advantage that the cabinet is very compact. The tweeter from the renowned Eminence company has a ceramic magnet, which results in a warmer basic sound than, for example, with a neodymium magnet, which goes very well with the amps of the series and delights with its bass reproduction. This can be further influenced by the 1-inch tweeter driver, which can be adjusted in three steps. Altogether, the speaker covers a wide frequency spectrum from 37 Hz to 17 kHz. With the two jack sockets on the rear side of the speaker, you can not only connect it to the amplifier, but also loop a second speaker through and use both with the amp.
This, in combination with one of the amplifiers of the Portaflex series, but especially with the PF-20T or the PF-50T, results in the typical, popular Ampeg sound as a compact solution, especially for recordings or smaller concerts.
