In 1994, the German instrument manufacturer Ortega began developing and building concert guitars in the Spanish style, but with modern means. In 2009, Ortega then launched their first acoustic bass guitar as part of the Challenger series, which also convinced Ken Taylor, bassist of Peter Maffay.
The D series builds on the Challenger series; the D1-4LE can convince with its solid spruce top in combination with mahogany for back, sides and neck üconvince. This results in a warm and assertive tone that is balanced across all strings and has an amazing amount of sustain for an acoustic bass. This can be amplified with a Fishman Isys+ preamp, which provides volume and dual-band tone control, plus a tuner and phase reverse switch should feedback problems arise live.
The bass also cuts a good figure visually: the opaque black lacquer finish in combination with the cream-coloured fingerboard and body binding and the Florentine cutaway give it a minimalist, elegant look. The manufacturing quality is very good and the instrument comes with a gig bag, a strap and safety strap holders.
