The German instrument manufacturer Ortega began in 1994 with the development and construction of concert guitars in the Spanish style, but with modern means. In 2009, Ortega then launched their first acoustic bass guitar as part of the Challenger series, which also convinced Ken Taylor, bassist for Peter Maffay.

The D series builds on the Challenger series; the D-Walker is a compact and, for its size, surprisingly solidly crafted instrument. The agathis body together with the mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard produces a wiry, defined tone that is understandably not particularly loud due to the small body size, but still stands up to a guitar, especially as the instrument unfolds a very different sound. Warm, full and clear down to the lowest registers, it's not bad that the B-Band A1.2 preamp only has a volume control. Due to the small body, the likelihood of feedback is pleasantly low. Visually, the bass also cuts a fine figure: the opaque white lacquer finish combined with the black fingerboard and body binding and the Florentine cutaway give it a minimalist, elegant look. The manufacturing quality is very good and the instrument comes with a gig bag and a strap.
